How to Prep for Your Appointment
24–48 Hours Before
Exfoliate thoroughly
Gently exfoliate your entire body, paying extra attention to dry areas like elbows, knees, ankles, wrists, and feet. Avoid oil-based scrubs that can leave a barrier on the skin.
Shave or wax ahead of time
Shave at least 12–24 hours before your appointment. Waxing should ideally be done 24–48 hours before so the skin has time to settle.
Schedule other beauty services 72 hours before
Manicures, pedicures, massages, facials, waxing, and other treatments should be completed before your spray tan.
The Day of Your Tan
Arrive with clean, dry skin
For the best application, your skin should be free of lotion, oils, perfume, deodorant, makeup, and body products.
Skip Dove/Bath and Body Works/other harsh products before your appointment
Some highly moisturizing soaps and body washes can leave a residue on the skin that may interfere with your tan.
Wear loose, dark clothing
Choose oversized, comfortable clothing and loose shoes or sandals. Avoid tight leggings, bras, socks, or anything that may rub against your fresh tan.
Come prepared for your preferred tan lines
You can tan in whatever makes you comfortable. Dark underwear or a swimsuit works perfectly, or you may choose to tan without them.
After your Appointment
Before Your First Rinse
Stay dry
Avoid water, sweating, working out, swimming, rain, and anything else that could get your skin wet while your tan develops.
Avoid skin-to-skin contact
Try not to cross your legs, rest your arms against your body, or do anything that causes excessive rubbing or sweating.
Wait for your recommended rinse time
Your artist will tell you exactly when to rinse based on the solution used. Do not leave a rapid tan on longer thinking it will make you darker. Follow your artist's rinse instructions for the best result.
Your First Rinse
Use lukewarm water
Take a quick rinse and avoid hot water.
Skip soap during your first rinse
Rinse with water only and gently use your hands to help remove the cosmetic bronzer.
Rinse until the water runs clear
Seeing color wash down the drain is completely normal — that's the cosmetic bronzer, not your developed tan disappearing.
Pat dry — don't rub
Gently pat your skin dry with a towel.
Your color may look lighter immediately after your first rinse. Don't panic! Your tan will continue developing over the next several hours. It will take 24 hours for the full color to develop.
MAKE YOUR TAN LAST
Moisturize daily
Hydrated skin = a longer-lasting, more even fade. Apply a spray-tan-friendly moisturizer every day.
Keep showers short + lukewarm
Long, hot showers and baths can make your tan fade faster.
Avoid exfoliating until you're ready to remove your tan
Skip scrubs, exfoliating gloves, loofahs, and aggressive shaving.
Pat dry after showering
Rubbing your skin with a towel can speed up fading.
Be mindful of chlorine + salt water
Pools, hot tubs, and frequent swimming can shorten the life of your tan.
Avoid products that speed up fading
Retinols, AHAs/BHAs, exfoliating acids, acne treatments, and other high-turnover skincare ingredients can cause uneven or faster fading where they're applied.
Don't forget SPF
A spray tan does not protect your skin from the sun. Always wear sunscreen when you're outside. Lotion sunscreen is better than spray-on!
HOW LONG WILL MY TAN LAST?
With proper prep and aftercare, most spray tans last approximately 5–10 days, depending on your skin, lifestyle, skincare routine, and how well you maintain it.
For the prettiest fade, keep your skin hydrated and let the tan gradually wear away before exfoliating thoroughly for your next appointment.
